Lifelong Buds Bake A Shot At Business With Orland Crumbl Cookie Shop

ORLAND PARK, IL — Two lifelong friends are putting it all on the line to get fresh, gourmet cookies in the hands of Orland Park residents. Ahmed Mahmoud, of Lisle, and his friend Omar Bayazid, of Palos Heights, will pop their first Crumbl cookies out of the oven this week, with the debut of their own Crumbl Cookies shop, located at 9505 W. 142nd Street, Unit 302 in Orlando Park. The shop will open Friday, August 12.

Mahmoud and Bayazid happened upon Crumbl by chance, during a visit to their hometown Kansas City a year ago. They just had to try these cookies, their friends told them. Skeptical, they took a bite. And then another. And then another.

The next day, they were back for a second dozen. They were crazy about those cookies, Mahmoud said.

They did some research, looked into franchising, and a year later, they’re ready to open in Orland Park. Both family men, they have friends and relatives across the south suburbs. Mahmoud is a married father to an 18-month-old; his wife works at Palos Hospital. Bayazid is married and a proud father to three boys and one girl.

“We thought, ‘hey, why not?'” Mahmoud told Patch. “Orland Park, Tinley, Mokena, Palos Heights—this is where we decided to settle, raise our families. We’re going to watch movies at Marcus, we’re doing hibachi on holidays at Wu’s House, so we thought it would be the perfect area. This is where we spend our time, so why not open a Crumbl here?”

Crumbl brings with its name a specific style and brand. Each week, customers are greeted with a new menu of six cookies. The rotating menu always features the shop’s signature milk chocolate chip and a variation on a chilled sugar cookie. Depending on the day and season, the other cookies on the menu could include flavors such as churro, lemon glaze, birthday cake, candy corn, macadamia nut, pink velvet, sea salt toffee or circus animal cookie.

“The idea is that every single week there’s a unique menu,” Mahmoud said.

The treats are mixed, rolled and baked in-house in an open kitchen and the cookies come as big as your hand.

“You should never be having an old, stale, cold cookie,” Mahmoud said. “You’ll be having a cookie that’s been backed 30 minutes ago.”

On the menu each week is the chocolate chip cookie, but for the Orland location, they’re also planning on cookies flavored doughnut, lemonade, and fried ice cream.

Customers can place their orders on self-serve kiosks throughout the store or order ahead on the Crumbl Cookies app. The app, which is available on Google Play and in the Apple Store, also unveils each week’s cookie menu every Sunday night, offering customers a sneak peek of what’s in store. The app also offers cookies for delivery.

“This is our first business venture,” Mahmoud said. “We put everything we got into this.

“Our dream is to be able to have a successful business here in our community, where we can serve our families and friends. Whether it’s a treat after an event at Sandburg High School or a quick snack before shopping at Mariano’s, we hope that Crumbl will be your go-to spot.
