Edwardsville boys golf plays two tourneys at The Den at Fox Creek

The Edwardsville Tigers boys golf team opened the 2022 schedule on the course they hope to finish the season in October.

Edwardsville used top-six rounds from Carter Crow and Mason Lewis to shoot 326 for a fifth-place performance in a field of 16 suburban Chicago schools at the Lincoln-Way West Tournament on Friday at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington.

The Tigers also played The Den, which is host to the Class 3A state tourney, on Thursday and shot 327 to finish ninth in the 16-team Prep Tour Showcase.

On Friday, both Lewis and Crow came in at 5-over par 77 to tie for sixth place. Edwardsville used Kolton Wright’s 84 and Bennett Babington’s 88 to get to 326.

Geneva won the team title at 307, with Lincoln-Way East (314), Hoffman Estates Conant (317), Lincoln-Way Central (323) and Edwardsville capping the top five. Geneva’s Austin Frick won the tourney at 73.

In Thursday’s Prep Tour Showcase, Hinsdale Central shot 298 to finish first, with Lemont (309), Lockport (312), Ottawa (315), Effingham St. Anthony (319), Springfield (320), Springfield SHG (321) and Benton (321) also finished ahead of the Tigers. O’Fallon finished 15th at 350.

Lewis shot a 1-over par 73 to tie for fourth, with Crow tied for sixth at 74. Babington’ 86 and Wright’s 94 completed Edwardsville’s scoring. Emil Riegger of Hinsdale Central was medalist with a 3-under 69.

Staunton 162, Mount Olive 232 – Preston Denney took medalist at 37, with teammate Broc Best one back at 38 to lead the Bulldogs to a season-opening dual win over the Wildcats at Timber Lakes in Staunton. The Dogs added a 42 from Luke DeWitt and 45 from Adam Overby. Mount Olive was led by Blaine Dickerson’s 42.

Effingham St. Anthony Tourney – Father McGivney shot 348 to place in a tie for sixth at the 16-team tournament at Indian Springs in Fillmore.

Host St. Anthony dominated the field, shooting 291 to beat teammates on tourney runner-up St. Anthony JV at 310. Olney was third at 330. Bradley Goodwin led McGivney at 78 to place 14th. The Griffins also scored an 85 from Brandon Reed, 88 from Riley Knobloch and 97 from Drew Villhard.

The tourney included three South Central Conference teams, with Hillsboro (375) in 13th, Vandalia (397) in 14th and Greenville (419) in 16th.


Prep Tour Showcase – Edwardsville senior Nicole Johnson puts her name in as a Class 2A state title contender by shooting 2-under par 70 to earn medalist honors in a strong 16-team field at Hickory Stick Golf Course in Decatur.

Johnson earned a one-shot victory over Orland Park Sandburg’s Jillian Cosler, Lincolnshire Stevenson’s Allie Santos and Glenbrook North’s Martha Kuwahara, who all came in at 71.

As a junior, Johnson had rounds of 74 and 75 at Hickory Stick last fall to get all-state honors with a 12th-place finish at state. She led Edwardsville to a 339 in this season’s opener to tie for 10th. Rachel Johnson shot 82, with Ruhee Gupchup at 93 and Ali Geminin at 94 to complete Edwardsville scoring.

Lincolnshire Stevenson and Glenbrook North both posted a 293, with Hinsdale Central (301), Barrington (311), Normal U High (314) and O’Fallon (328) rounding out the top six.
